MEDICAL ONCOLOGY

Medical Oncology Department was first established as Hematology-Oncology Department in 1991 and continued its academic and service activities until 2006. In 2006, these two disciplines were separated and continued their studies under the names of Hematology Department and Medical Oncology Department. Medical Oncology department provides service in 3 main departments as Polyclinic, Service and Day Treatment Unit (Chemotherapy Unit).

In the Medical Oncology Polyclinic, 80-120 patients are served daily, including new patient admission and follow-up-treated patients’ controls. Patients are evaluated according to the latest scientific developments, and targeted therapies and immunotherapies as well as chemotherapy and hormone treatments are applied in the light of the latest developments.

In addition, genetic studies that guide the effectiveness of various drugs are carried out in our hospital, which allows oncological treatments to be carried out in the healthiest way. In our hospital, there are separate tumor councils according to tumor groups, they meet regularly every week and the patients are evaluated in a multidisciplinary manner in these councils. Thus, the most optimal oncological approaches are carried out as a result of the joint evaluation of all cancer-related branches.

In the Medical Oncology department, the importance of various supportive treatments, especially nutritional support and psychosocial support, in addition to the oncological evaluation and treatment of patients, is well known, and follow-up and treatments are carried out by consulting these departments in a sensitive way.

Oncology service, on the other hand, has 19 beds and approximately 100 patients are hospitalized and discharged per month. All rooms have single beds. In our service, long-term infusion chemotherapy applications, palliative care with targeted therapies and supportive treatment applications are performed.

The Day Treatment Unit, where most of the oncological treatments are performed, has 27 beds and provides service to approximately 100 patients per day. A total of 11 nurses, one of whom is the responsible nurse, work in the Day Treatment Unit. In our chemotherapy drug preparation unit, a semi-automatic system is used.

Dokuz Eylul University Palliative Care started its activities with the movement started by a small group in June 2008, and then continued its activities as a more crowded group on 26 May 2010, to which health professionals from different branches related to the field of oncology were invited as the Palliative Care Working Group. Our Palliative Care Application and Research Center, which was officially established on September 7, 2012, provides services to many patients and their families, especially adult and pediatric oncology patients. In this center, our nurses, psychologists, dietitians and physiotherapists work alongside faculty members from different fields related to oncology patients.
